Craig's List Dangers

BJ said I could post this because he was too upset after reading my friend's Facebook post.
Bj and I try to keep the posts upbeat and hopefully fun to read.  Today, I'll break from this because I think it's too important to not share.

Craig's list allows ads for "Free Pets to Good Homes".  On Craig's List site there is a warning, "As you may be aware, animals given away for free can, and unfortunately often do, meet gruesome fates.  They can end up in the hands of animal abusers..."   These free pet ads make it very easy for the animals to be taken and sold for research or abused.

If Craig's List did not allow these ads it wouldn't be so easy to get the pets.  It won't prevent abusers from getting dogs elsewhere; it would just make it harder.

I would like to start a campaign to get Craigslist to stop allowing these ads, and I don't know how.  Can anyone help?

The picture below is upsetting.  If you don't want to view it, don't scroll down.  If you want to leave a comment, scroll down quickly.

Please do not give away free pets on Craigslist. Even on Craigslist’s own site, the dangers are forewarned. “As you may be aware, animals given away for free can, and unfortunately often do, meet gruesome fates. They can end up in the hands of animal abusers like Barry Herbeck, a Wisconsin man who was convicted last year of torturing and killing animals he obtained through "free to good home" ads. He confessed to taking his kids with him when responding to the ads so people would be comfortable turning animals over to him. People known as "bunchers," who obtain animals illegally from random sources to sell to research facilities for profit, often acquire animals by answering "free to good home" ads.”

Because there are animal abusers out there who spend time on Craigslist looking for free animals.

“Free to good home” dogs and cats are easily obtained for research, dog fighting, baiting, etc.

I don’t know how often this actually happens. There is no real way of knowing.

PLEASE always do a home check/visit for any animal you are placing. Anyone who offers an animal up for adoption should personally visit the home of the potential guardian beforehand and follow up on the adoption later.

Don’t advertise free pets; Do convince others not to.

You can help end the cruelty by sharing the truth about animals’ abuse. If you agree that animals feel, suffer, love and the truth about their abuse should be exposed, please honor our work by “like” our page. Thank you! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Animal-Cruelty-Exposed/363725540304160

  1. Lynda I don't use Craigslist so I'm not sure how you'd go about stopping this horrible practice, but I've shared your post to G+ and twitter and maybe someone out there can help you

  2. I think there's a chance for abuse any time you post an ad, whether it be in a newspaper, or a flyer at the local community board. I'm sure the same would apply to Craig's List. The only way to stop this is to only give pets to people you know and trust. By the way, the BJ quoted in this article is not me - just to avoid any confusion.

  3. Heard about this from Gizmo's mom. I wish I had better advice for you, as I have heard about this problem for a long time. If people no longer want their pets anymore, the pet is better off at an animal shelter. At least if they are going to die, it will be done by humane means at the shelter. I think most people choose Craigslist as an alternative because they are afraid of what might happen at an animal shelter. Also, shelters do charge money sometimes for people to drop off their pets. Right now, informing others is the only thing I can think of :/
