One of My Beefs -

NYC is a dangerous place for us to walk.  Too many drivers do not obey the laws.  This Sunday morning Mom and I drove from 63rd to 80th streets and it was scary looking out of the window.
I watched one car driving in the bike lane.  At least one driver making a right turn from the left hand lane almost causing an accident and hitting a pedestrian because he didn't see her.

The crosswalks were narrow and too many drivers drove into them.  So NYC DOT painted a WIDE white line a few feet back from the original.  To no avail (VBP).  My observation (VBP) showed that only one taxi driver obeyed that one.  Most don't even obey the old line.  Bus drivers also ignore this one.   What do they think, that the city spent money on paint and time to make the street pretty.  Unbelievable.

Drivers make turns on red lights - a no. no in the city and this is not to mention those who blatantly pass red lights.

I was very glad I was wearing my seat belt.

It's no wonder why NYC is dangerous for pedestrians.

VISIT TO THE VET - I Thought

It's BJ.  When we went for my afternoon walk Mom said we were going to the pet store for food.  I wagged my tail faster because I always get cookies from the bowl on the counter.   Then it happened! We went to 2nd Avenue, which we always do, and walked up to 65th Street.  Then, we started to cross the street and I realized where we were.  We were heading toward the vet's office.

That is a NO, NO.  There was no way I was going to walk down that street.  So, even though we were in the middle of crossing the street I dug in and refused to walk.  The more Mom pull me, the more I dug in.  Finally since the light was changing, I loosened up and she pulled me to the sidewalk.  She kept telling me we weren't going to the vet, but I was too scared to listen.

Then, the greatest thing happened,  We crossed the street and started up to 66th.  We weren't going to the vet.  We were really going to the pet store.  A perfect ending.  I got my cookies.

ALMOST LOST DOG

It's BJ.  This morning a scary thing happened.   My leash slipped off Mom's arm and she didn't notice at first.  She said she started to panic and ran up and down the street we just came from.  I would have been hard to miss.  I was wearing my bright red FidoFleece, my collar with all my tags and phone number, and my leash.

She ran home because she thought I might have gone there (I know the way.)  By this time Mom was crying, her stomach was upset, and wasn't thinking clearly, so she ran back to retrace our steps.  No luck, so she ran back home and Gary, our doorman, asked if he spoke to the other doorman on the blocks.  Nope, she was so upset she didn't think of it.  Instead she went back to our apartment to get her cell phone and sure enough one of the doorman on the other block called.

When she came to get me she was crying and very grateful.  Someone saw me and brought me to the nearest building; that's why she didn't see me on the street.  I was inside.   I think I was in a bit of shock because I could't find mommy and thought the worst.  I had been abandoned on the streets when I was a puppy.  I was a very happy pup when I saw her and got picked up and hugged.

We went home for breakfast.
Lessons learned:
1.  ALWAYS hold onto the leash with your and and not on your arm.
2. ALWAYS carry your cell phone.  It would have saved a lot of running.

DIETING

Why do people diet when they don't need to diet?  Mom is not fat.  She's not even overweight.  But, she decided to lose a few (8) pounds.  There are two problems with this course of action.

1.  Except for yogurt and milk, she doesn't share her food because she's has to measure everything and there's none left for me.  Grrrr.

2.  This one is even worse - If she loses weight then her lap won't be soft and cuddly when I sit on her lap.  This is not good.

HELP.  Someone talk to her.

It's BJ.  Big happenings for Mom.  Friday was her birthday, a big one, and she had an aliyah (a blessing at the Torah) in synagogue this morning.   She told me it was very nice and the rabbi gave her a beautiful blessing.

I wouldn't know, I couldn't go because I wasn't allowed in.  It is not fair.  I'm family and should been allowed to be there for her.  They let in two legged children who run around and make noise.  I would have sat quietly next to Mom and been very good.  Well, maybe I would have given a Woof, woof  after the blessing to show my approval.

Her synagogue doesn't have a service for the "blessing of the animals".  She said that even though we're Jewish she would take me to a church that has that SPECIAL day.  The priest would welcome me and give me a blessing.  Woof, woof.

Craig's List Dangers

BJ said I could post this because he was too upset after reading my friend's Facebook post.
Bj and I try to keep the posts upbeat and hopefully fun to read.  Today, I'll break from this because I think it's too important to not share.

Craig's list allows ads for "Free Pets to Good Homes".  On Craig's List site there is a warning, "As you may be aware, animals given away for free can, and unfortunately often do, meet gruesome fates.  They can end up in the hands of animal abusers..."   These free pet ads make it very easy for the animals to be taken and sold for research or abused.

If Craig's List did not allow these ads it wouldn't be so easy to get the pets.  It won't prevent abusers from getting dogs elsewhere; it would just make it harder.

I would like to start a campaign to get Craigslist to stop allowing these ads, and I don't know how.  Can anyone help?

The picture below is upsetting.  If you don't want to view it, don't scroll down.  If you want to leave a comment, scroll down quickly.

Photo: Pets in Danger on Craigslist!!! SHARE!!! Begging all of you to read and pass this on! You can save a life!

Please do not give away free pets on Craigslist. Even on Craigslist’s own site, the dangers are forewarned. “As you may be aware, animals given away for free can, and unfortunately often do, meet gruesome fates. They can end up in the hands of animal abusers like Barry Herbeck, a Wisconsin man who was convicted last year of torturing and killing animals he obtained through "free to good home" ads. He confessed to taking his kids with him when responding to the ads so people would be comfortable turning animals over to him. People known as "bunchers," who obtain animals illegally from random sources to sell to research facilities for profit, often acquire animals by answering "free to good home" ads.”

Because there are animal abusers out there who spend time on Craigslist looking for free animals.

“Free to good home” dogs and cats are easily obtained for research, dog fighting, baiting, etc.

I don’t know how often this actually happens. There is no real way of knowing.

PLEASE always do a home check/visit for any animal you are placing. Anyone who offers an animal up for adoption should personally visit the home of the potential guardian beforehand and follow up on the adoption later.

Don’t advertise free pets; Do convince others not to.

You can help end the cruelty by sharing the truth about animals’ abuse. If you agree that animals feel, suffer, love and the truth about their abuse should be exposed, please honor our work by “like” our page. Thank you! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Animal-Cruelty-Exposed/363725540304160

BACK AT THE PARK

It's BJ.  The last two days have been fun going to Central Park.  Between the rain and my shoulder injury we haven't gone to the park.  It's a long walk and then I can run around without a leash and say hello to my friends.

This is my favorite time of year.  People are throwing out Christmas trees and there is so much more to sniff and pee on.

Saturday was very special.  Remember that my birthday is just around the corner - it's time for my Bat Mitzvah.  (My friends said it's a Bark Mitzvah.)  Normally I get treats for my birthday.  This year was different.  Don't i look spiffy in my coat.  It's warm and cozy.

Then came the next great thing.  I came across the first discarded Christmas tree.  I sniffed and sniffed and went on to the next tree to sniff.

I was so happy on the way to the park.  It was a long time since I had seen my friends.

GET TO KNOW "TERRIER TORRENT"

Pamela, from Something Wagging This Way Comes had a wonderful idea, a Pet Bloggers Gift Exchange.  We were paired with another blogger, to get to know them, and share encouragement and compliments so that other bloggers could get to know them too.  It was serendipitous that BJ and I were teamed with Gizmo, the Terrier Torrent.

It turned out that Gizmo and I, BJ,  have a lot in common.  Gizmo describes himself as "a handsome terrier-about-town with a distinct point of view.  And that he is.  Most amazing is that we look alike.   How great is that!
This is me.

??????????????????????
This is Gizmo
If I weren't recently groomed I would look scruffy just like Gizmo.  Anyway, we both came from shelters and we both filled a need for our new moms.

The "girl", as Gizmo calls her,  had recently lost Bruno, her long-time companion and the house had an empty feel to it.  She decided she'd give a pup a second chance and visited The County's Animal Control Shelter in Florida.  We all know that we humans do not choose a pup; the pup chooses us.  Whether it's with a sad face or eyes, or a happy wagging tail, they decide.  Sure enough, a tiny terrier chose her and gave her those sad puppy eyes to seal the deal.   Gizmo had a forever home.  As you can see, he is adorable.

Things were almost the same for BJ, except that he sealed the deal with a fast wagging tail.  Our similarities continued,  Gizmo and BJ celebrate Hanukkah, We both want to stop animal cruelty,  and want no-kill shelters.  Most of all we give our moms unconditional love and are grateful to be part of their family.

There are a few things that I envy.  Gizmo lives in Florida with warm weather and it's easy to go on long hikes.  They belong to a Doggie Social Club and recently went to Saddle Creek with trails that went through the trees and grass with beautiful views.

That's Gizmo in the front - where else?

They also took a kayaking trip on the Weeki Wachee River, wherever that is, and got to see the manatees, an alligator, and birds.  The manatees come right up to the kayaks.  Gizmo posts such beautiful and serene pictures so you just imagine yourself with them.

We love reading Gizmo's posts and seeing the pictures.  I wait for tales of their next adventure and pretend I'm with them. Stop by Terrier Torrent and say hello.  Tell Gizmo, BJ from Two Ears and a Tail says hello.

Take time to meet all the bloggers sharing gifts of encouragement and love at the Pet Bloggers Gift Exchange this season.

It's BJ.  The ball dropped in Times Square and with it came 2013.  Two good things, it didn't shatter and it stays up all year.  Mom wouldn't take me to Times Square.  It's not fair, she's been there before so  why can't I go.  The fact that there are a million plus people and there's no room to walk and everyone is a lot taller and they wouldn't see me, is no excuse.  Humph.

On the bright side, Mom and I both have birthdays this month.  Mom gave me January 22nd.  I'm going to be 13!.  I should have a Bar Mitzvah and have been practicing barking in Hebrew.  I don't think there's a difference, but if it makes her happy, so what.  In case you're not sure what a Bar Mitzvah is - when a boy reaches the age of 13 he is welcomed in as an adult in the Jewish community.  Girls have them too, that's called a Bat (pronounced bot) Mitzvah.

Mom's birthday is on the 18th.  I put down her age but she deleted it.  Humph.  She's having an aleyah in synagogue.  It's a blessing at the Torah.  It's a very nice honor and she's happy about it.  Once again I can't go.  The rabbis won't let me in.  It's not fair.  I'll be a good dog and won'r jump up and down and bark to show how happy I am.

One thing I do get to do is to say Happy New Year.  I wish you a healthy year and that we're all here next year reading and writing the blogs.  Also, I wish for lots of cookies for everyone.
