If people no longer want their pets anymore, the pet is better off at an animal shelter. At least if they are going to die, it will be done by humane means at the shelter. I think most people choose Craigslist as an alternative because they are afraid of what might happen at an animal shelter. Also, shelters do charge money sometimes for people to drop off their pets. I'm sure the same would apply to Craig's List. The only way to stop this is to only give pets to people you know and trust.
